Happy Sunday! Today, I find that my scrap sock yarn bowl runneth over.
The ever increasing amount of leftovers going into this bowl got me thinking about possible projects for them.
The sister requested some crocheted butterflies. What better use for some scraps? Then I thought, there has to be some great projects out there, other than the usual suspects (Sock yarn blanket), that would help me to work down this basket.
So off to Ravelry I went. I found some fun projects.
The usual suspects ( Nothing wrong with these lovely projects):
Some new to me ideas:
- Knittergal's blanket
- Butterflys
- Stashbusting Spiral Socks
- Stripes and Stripes Scarf
- Sock yarn rug
- Sock yarn Lanterns
Maybe your scraps are not all sock yarn, the beauty is I can see all of these projects working with other yarns.
What do you with your scraps?
XO
Andi
Lovely scraps Andi and I've already copped one of the patterns you listed.
I put my scraps in a glass jar as decoration and use them for stash busting projects similar to what you've listed. I also use them for Christmas decorations, gift tags and for lengths long enough, I use them to do embroidery or cross-stitch on knit/crochet projects.

I am making a sock yarn blanket-but using yarn held double, two colors at a time. This makes me feel like it might get finished in my lifetime.
I also recently started trying to figure out crochet so I can make a scrappy granny square scarf.

thanks for pulling all these together!!!
I'm on my 3rd (yes, THIRD!!!) mitered square blanket....did the traveler's blanket, too...just two rows, switch, two rows, switch, etc---and i did the wider stripes socks that Susan b anderson posted awhile back; i love the scarf and cowl...they are now on the 'list'....i have two large baskets FULL of sock yarn scraps....i could probably knit the rest of my life just from that stash!

I have loved and been saving up scraps for the Beekeepers Quilt for a while, but you may have sidetracked me and made me want to save them up for something else! :P The Mini Mania Scarf is lovely :)

Tilt & Twist is a great pattern if you want to make socks out of your sock yarn scraps. It's very adaptable. You can adjust the stripes to any width, or make "strips" of different colors for a patchwork effect. I'm making a modified pair using only 2 colors, half and half.

Those lanterns are gorgeous. I keep saving all my sock scraps with hope to make a pair of random striped socks, so maybe that will happen soon.

I heard also that to help nature some ladies leave a bit of yarn outdoors to help the birds when they are making nests. It is so cute to see some of their nests with a bit of color. She had a photo and that was adorable! Thank you for the project ideas Andi. Any yarn in your hands will turn into beautiful things. Hugs!

I have been saving all my left over yarn from my parents alpacas to make a Family Tree Afghan.

Too bad I don't have enough scraps for the spiral socks or stripes scarf. Great list; thanks for putting this together!

Oh, can't wait to see what you decide to make! I've got my eye on that stripes and stripes cowl....and fortunately I have a little bit of stash to work from... haha . Thanks for linking my blanket...I could tell something was up when my stats skyrocketed this morning! Must be Andi's readers ; ) Have a great day!

I've used my left over yarn to make more socks. I knit the cuff from the striped/pattern yarn then knit the heel and foot from a solid complimentary yarn. I've made several socks this way. It's economical and my recipients have always liked them. I've also made miniature sweater ornaments for the Christmas tree. The pattern I use is in "Knitted Gifts". I used to make tiny sock earrings as well. The pattern is on size 0000 needles. Have to make some more of those soon.

Hello
I found you via Annie at Knitsofacto, it's so strange that you posted about this leftover problem as i was just thinking this evening what on earth and I going to make with all these sock yarn leftovers that seem to be growing by the multiples now that i am really into knitting shawls. Thanks so much for sharing these brilliant Ravelry ideas xox Penny

I manage to use scrap yarn for toy knitting. You have some gorgeous colours there, I'm sure you'll make pretty scraps look even prettier :)

Last time, I sent my scraps to a friend for yarmulkes. This time I am toying with the idea of making tights in all the scrappy goodness.

I have a mini-mania scarf in sock yarn which I think I'll be knitting when I die. It is so much effort and is so timeconsuming for very little result.
Don't do it!!!

I think my scraps are either in a drawer or I donate them to the childcare program.

beautiful butterflies and that basket of scraps just begs to be knit up into something lovely.

AHHh that butterflies are too flipping cute! I am imagining them all strung about on a cord to decorate a room or cascading down "chandelier" style from a light fitting. Or on a wreathe on a little girls head or... sorry, totally running away with my imagination there.
I don't have near as many sock yarn scraps as you would, but I'm still filing some of these ideas away for later. I love the bee keeper's quilt, but feel less inclined to want to make one since it's so popular now (which is silly.. but still).

My scraps go in a big bag and get used for dolly clothes, crochet brooches for the mothers day stall, dolly blankets, plant pot cosies, kids' weaving projects, god's eyes, knitting experiments and strange contraptions designed by my son for hoisting, suspending or entrapping. I also keep a jar of really scrapping bits from weaving in at the end of a project for kids' crafty stuff like hair, sticking and play food. In our house there is nothing that cannot be solved without yarn.

Thanks so much for these lovely ideas, even though I am totally 'aargh!' about sock yarn weight at the moment, having just finished some fiddly little design commissions in that weight. Longing for a chunky project next :-)
Can I be totally self-promoting and add this: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jitterbug-boogie-headband to your list? It's a free one of mine that I'm sad to say has never had much love!

I love your ideas here! I may have to make the sock yarn scarf once I'm done with my current...mitered square blanket. I'm doing one square per day so it'll be a nice long while before that happens.
