Hello and happy Sunday!
Crochet pattern~ Kata Square
It is summer and that means it is hot here in Arizona. That is the norm, but what isn't the norm is that many of you are suffering through severe high temps that you aren't accustom to.
The heat is not only affecting the U.S., but many in Europe. As I am accustomed to sweltering summers, my knitting barely skips a beat. This got me wondering, has the heat caused your desire to play with yarn to decrease or diminish?
I have many things that I do differently when the heat is on. Blankets are still being knit, but they don't come near my lap. Instead I will work on my sock yarn scrap blanket at a table. Are you finding ways to still knit while not overheating? If so I would love to hear about them. Also I would love to hear tips on how you stay cool in the summer months. You all always have the best advice.
I know I have been bombarding you with songs as of late. Something about the Summer months get me music crazy. Enjoy some Vance as I am wishing you all a great Summer. :)
Have the best day today!
XO,
Andi
That crochet is looking cool as a cucumber, just the thing for the heat!

I too live in a hot climate, (even though it is Winter now) and I don't really stop knitting either. I do a little more crochet in the Summer, and like you don't let large projects sit in my lap. I knit on the bus which is air conditioned. If I don't have air conditioning, I just have a spray bottle of water and a fan and spray my face. Oh yes and a cool drink with ice cubes is always within reach

Hi Andi - Here in South Africa our summers are uber hot too! My knitting solution is to work at the table with a fan blowing into my face! Nothing will stop me knitting! Enjoy your Summer!!! xxx

No. I knit what needs to be worked on no matter what the temp. Here we get a breeze around 4-5. We've been trying what out realtor does, keep the blinds and windows closed til then. It helps. I usually run in the morning and try to before 11 as it starts creeping past 70's then. May run today as I only got in 3 runs during the week and the husband is going into work to get some of his final project done for ASU. I got Arizona University wrong.

gotta knit, gotta knit!!! Who cares if it's 100 degrees out side (with 99% humidity?!?) Of course, I knit in a/c (although ours is set at 78 which I know isn't very cool for some); and then there is the car knitting---with the a/c turned on full blast!!! :) My problem isn't so much knitting in the heat, but wanting desperately to WEAR some knitted things....closest I come is a shawl to church. Bring on WINTER!!!

I love the songs and videos. They turn me onto a whole different genre that I would never have been exposed to and I love them all.
Me, I knit a lot in the air condition and they keep it very cold so it does not stop me from knitting anything.

So up until about 3 months ago, I was living in Cambodia, in a village, with no air conditioning and the heat there absolutely effected my knitting. I barely knit at all during the 10 months I was there and I started cross stitching a lot. Now that I'm back in Kentucky, I rarely feel hot and being in an air conditioned building, I am usually quite chilly, even if it is near 100 degrees so not only am I knitting whatever I feel like, including sock scrap blankets, I'm actually wearing hand knits!

I live in Winnipeg, Canada normal summer tempts often reach 30+ degrees celcius (80+F). The only reason summer slows down my knitting is because I am a bit busier than in the winter and cooler months. I have never made a blanket so when I do I would maybe avoid it in the summer months I suppose because it isn't portable and I am more on the go in summer. This summer has been full of shawl knitting, so smaller projects.

So far we're finding Iowa summer to be too hot and humid during the day but things cool off pretty nicely at night. Still too humid, though. We can't get a/c set up this year but we are getting a dehumidifier soon. I remember not minding the heat at all when I lived in Arizona because it was so dry, but I didn't know how to knit back then so I might have felt different with something heavy and wooly in my lap! Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to knit a blanket without getting it anywhere near me, and it's a little tricky.

Thanks Andi. I hope you have a great knitting day.
It has been over a hundred here all week, and it hasn't affected my knitting one bit. Although we do have AC.

It's VERY hot and humid out here, but I spend most of my time indoors (at the office all day, and at home) with the A/C on. I prefer to knit something I can wear when I'm done, so I've been knitting summer tops with cotton yarn and such. Actually I did knit with wool in summer and I was fine. But definitely near AC or in slightly cooler weather.

It is hot and humid here in Virginia. I hate it! LOL! My fingers are swollen like balloons - which doesn't make it easy to knit - but nothing is going to stop me - not me!!
Love your coffee mug!! Where did you find it?

I guess living in a hot climate for so many years, it really doesn't affect my knitting. I'm still knitting socks and my blanket.
My biggest tip for keeping cool is having the fan blowing my way and plenty of ice cold water!
Happy knitting.

We have been lucky - only a handful of real scorcher days in July - and we've had actual RAIN! YAY!

I don't think I could not knit if I tried! I never thought of using a table to hold a blanket project though-great idea! I always struggle with blankets because they're so much warmer on the lap than anything else.

We had a very, very hot July here in Italy... It was so hot that we had to stay indoors most of the time, hiding from the merciless sun... but we also did many trips to the seaside with kids too. I can't knit when it's too hot; just a thought of holding yarn in my hands when the temperatures are soaring is unbearable... But it's been a bit cooler for the past few days and I've been trying to catch up with my passion.
Happy August!

Luckily, it's cooled down here in the UK, but it is meant to heat up again. Often I will switch from knitting to spinning if it is too hot, but I don't really stop knitting entirely. That would just be wrong!

Oh I LOVE that square. it is perfection. Color, pattern every thing
Cool ideas:
I have a fan blowing over me while Im out on the screened porch.
I have a mineral spray that I spray on my face and neck.
I LOVE the heat. I love storms. I love to sleep outside on my porch.
I also love to swim.

it's insanely hot here on the island this summer. We're in an extreme drought -- no water in the rivers for the salmon to spawn; forest fires; and level 3 water restrictions (4 is the highest).
I knit even in the heat. I just finished a Nordic shawl made with Alafoss Lopi wool and it was so warm when on my lap. Glad that's over. I too sometimes knit at the kitchen counter and keep my knitting on the counter. My lovely Spinning Fates Megara in Schrodinger's Cat arrived but my small needles haven't arrived yet so I'll have to start something else. I need to get started on Christmas presents so it may end up being a shawl first.

I knit year round regardless if the weather is 115F or 50F. I do have a blanket that is in time out until it's a little cooler because the thought of 100% wool in worsted weight just doesn't appeal to me right now.
Oh, and I drink hot tea year round too because if I had to wait for cooler weather it would be a long wait.:)
Happy knitting.

I put a fan on in my studio today while I spun. But I can say that this heat is making me not want to create as much. Maybe that's just bordem too though. I've been so busy that knitting isn't a priority and when I do have time I don't want to.

Poor Andi...Crocheting or knitting small cotton projects is the best I think. Thankfully, Fall is almost here :D
By the way, thank you for the cucumber water tip, it really works, and it's very refreshing!

I've put off my scrap blanket because it's just too hot! I tried with it beside me and I can go about an hour then it throws the heat. I wish for you some cooler days :)

Unfortunately I don't have any advice to share, although we'll always have one or two heatwaves during summer in the Netherlands, it's never quite long enough to really invest in airconditioning or the like (or have any kind of plan other than moan and complain about how hot it is). So my coping strategy is to try not to melt and knitting is kept to a minimum. It was quite bearable the last few weeks but temps are really up again this week!
